(484) 388-1698 Our Tailwater History
As a result of the Flood Control Act of 1938, the tailwaters of Norfork and Bull shoals dams were created. These cold water releases became unsuitable for native warmwater species, as the average tempuratures of the water of both dams is about 48 degrees.
After experimental stockings, regular stocking of trout began in the mid 1950s.
Although rainbows are the most common trout in these waters, brooks, browns and cutthroats can be found in both the White and Norfork tailwaters, and some species are area specific.
The generation of hydroelectric power began in 1956, and I believe it is the result of these varying water releases that make the White and Norfork the most interesting fisheries I have experienced regarding fish behavior.
In the course of my life I have been fortunate enough to have fished many habitats in North America, and very few measure up to the White River in terms of numbers and size of species!
